The Half Off Sale

A couple of weeks ago I was trying to hurry and get out of the house so that I could make it on time to a local Savers thrift store.  I wanted to be there right at 9am when it opens as it was a day when everything was 50% off.

But getting the kids off to school in the morning, taking care of 2 dogs and myself sometimes takes longer than I anticipate.  On this particular morning I was rushing so much that I forgot my phone and didn’t realize it until I arrived at the thrift store.

I don’t use my phone a lot as I like to source items that are vintage and/or different.  But sometimes I’ll come across something that might be a little pricier and I’m not sure if it’s worth getting.  Or it might be something that I’m just not sure about and would like to double check if it’s worth getting.  Those are times when I will check my phone for completed sold listings on Ebay.

I used to feel uncomfortable doing so, but if you go to any thrift store, everyone is on their phone.  So I really don’t care anymore.

I did actually panic a little bit about not having it.  Not just because I couldn’t look anything up, but I’m just so used to having my phone with me that when i don’t, it’s as if a body part is missing. It’s really crazy.

So here are the items that I picked up and we’ll see whether or not they are wins or busts.

I listed this vintage little animated Tweety bird for $42.99 or best offer and paid $4 for him.

A few of them have sold for a decent price.

But I’ve also seen some go for as low as $14.99.  I’m of the opinion that you should price things high and wait for the right person to come along.  Maybe the person that sold it for $14.99 got it for cheap and would rather sell it quickly than have to wait for a long time to get a better price for it.  The amount of work is the same and I’d rather make a higher hourly rate than a lower one.  But the have quicker turnaround and I have to store my item until it (hopefully) sells.

Brass Candle Holders

I have these solid brass candle holders listed for $79.99 or best offer.  I paid $8 for them. They are 12″ tall and very heavy.  I think they are gorgeous.  There isn’t another pair like them and I’m hoping someone likes them as much as I do and will offer me a decent price for them.  When looking at completed listings, these types of holders vary a lot in price.  Some have sold for as much as I’m asking, others for very little.  Again, I’m pricing mine high and we’ll see what happens.

Salt & Pepper Shakers

The following vintage salt and pepper shakers I have listed for $12.99 plus shipping without a best offer.  I paid $1.50.  I thought they were kind of cool and they are from Japan.

These were listed for $12.50 with best offer and when I checked Watchcount the sold price was $9.99.

But there are quite a few of them for sale and some sold for as little as $4.25.  This is one item that I probably would have passed on if I had my phone and looked it up.

Bus Driver Mug

I just recently read about school buses on Kari’s blog She Thrifts and noticed this mug and thought I’d give it a try as it was only $.40.  I have it listed for $12.99 plus shipping.  But after doing a little bit of research, I would have left this mug behind too.  These mugs (or school bug mugs in general) aren’t really going for much at all.

Burwood Vintage Wall Hangings

The last item I picked up on this particular trip was this interesting set of vintage wall hangings.

This company has produced quite a wide range of wall hangings.  Some going for decent money and others that don’t.  I wasn’t able to find anything on this particular design so I listed it kind of high, $129.99 with a best offer. Luckily they are stamped on the back and I could date them.  They are are older than I am.  I was born in 75 and these are from 71.  These beautiful pieces are almost a half century old.

I think they are so cool and hope, again, that someone loves them as much as I do.

So there you have it, these are the items I purchased without my phone.  I will try to maybe update this post if something sells, and if I remember.  🙂

Do any of you Ebay sellers ever source without your phone?
